Dasia Heard is originally from Milford, Delaware, where her love for animals started at a young age. She knew she wanted to become a veterinarian when she was 8 years old. Her early interest in animals began with horseback riding lessons, and in high school, she had the opportunity to work in a veterinary office. That experience helped her realize how much she enjoyed the field and confirmed that veterinary medicine was the career path she wanted to pursue.
Growing up, Dasia had a variety of pets, including fish, a German Shepherd, and a Yorkshire Terrier. Today, she has a 3-year-old German Shepherd named Indigo. In her free time, Dasia enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, teaching Indigo new tricks, and traveling whenever time allows.
Dasia is currently a veterinary student at Tuskegee University and is expected to graduate in May 2028. She completed her undergraduate studies at Hampton University.
Her areas of interest include small animal surgery and mixed animal general practice. So far, her favorite part of veterinary school has been anesthesia and surgery labs because she enjoys hands-on activities. During her externship, she is looking forward to strengthening day-to-day clinical skills such as blood draws, catheter placements, and dental cleanings. She also hopes the experience will help prepare her for junior surgery in the upcoming semester.
Dasia chose the V.O.S. externship program after it was recommended to her by a classmate and after seeing the program through Instagram ads. She has also been interested in living in Las Vegas after graduation, making this externship a great opportunity to learn more about the area and the veterinary opportunities available here.
After graduation, Dasia hopes to either work in general practice or complete an internship.
