Meet the newest extern at Craig Road Animal Hospital, Megan!
Megan is currently a fourth-year student at Colorado State University and will graduate in 2021; she obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Ohio State University. She grew up mostly in Reno, but Megan said she’s “been all over the place.” She said she wanted to become a veterinarian to help preserve the animal-human bond.
“I really just think that it’s so unique and so special, we really can’t experience that connection with anything else,” Megan said. “I have dedicated my life to working with it and I have no regrets.”
Some of her volunteer experience includes working in Puerto Rico for a Spayathon by The Humane Society of the United States, and she also spent a lot of her time working in shelters in Nevada, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. While an undergrad, she also did some outreach for the program Girls Who Code. Megan said that programming is something she enjoys and hopes more young girls learn about in the future.
She’s interested in small animal medicine, including internal medicine. Megan said managing chronic disease, endocrinology, and chronic gastrointestinal disease are some of her favorites. She has also started showing an interest in dental after being adverse to teeth for a few years.
“In the past, I’ve always been, ‘I hate teeth! I hate teeth!'” she joked. “But now it’s become something of a pet project for me.”
With her externship at Craig Road, Megan said she’s excited to be out of the classroom and back in the real world. She’s also excited to interact with clients outside of a teaching hospital; she’s looking forward to seeing the diagnostic process up close.
In her spare time, Megan enjoys spending time with her partner and her “adventure buddy,” her 3-year-old Alaskan Malamute named Chewbacca. Megan and Chewy often go hiking and exploring together. Megan is also an avid cook and enjoys cooking, and has gotten back into painting during the quarantine.
Welcome to the team, Megan!
