Payton Zarnik was born in Okinawa, Japan on a military base, where her father served as a U.S. Marine. After his retirement, her family relocated to Yuma, Arizona. She later moved to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona for her undergraduate studies and remained there to pursue her veterinary degree.
Payton grew up surrounded by animals—dogs, cats, gerbils, and hamsters—which naturally fostered her love for veterinary medicine. Her passion expanded to horses as she got older, inspiring a strong interest in equine medicine as well.
Her commitment to animal care began early. At just 13 years old, she started volunteering at local animal shelters, followed by work at a therapeutic horseback riding center. At 18, she secured her first veterinary technician job at an urgent care clinic and went on to gain experience in several different practices.
Payton is currently a veterinary student at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, with an expected graduation date of August 2026.
During her time in Las Vegas, she’s excited to explore cute cafés where she can study for the NAVLE, enjoy new experiences, and get to know the city. Throughout her externship, Payton is eager to gain as much hands-on surgical experience as possible.
In her free time, she enjoys horseback riding, baking, crafting, and spending time with her pets—her dogs, her cat, and her fish.
