Say “hello” to Asha, the newest extern to join the team at Craig Road Animal Hospital!
Asha is from San Antonio, Texas, and is a fourth-year student at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Midwestern University. She will graduate in May 2021. Growing up, Asha was a big animal lover but hadn’t considered going into animal medicine. She said she didn’t consider veterinary medicine as a career until she was a student at the University of Houston.
“I originally started out as an engineering major, and I did not like that,” Asha said. “I was spending all my time volunteering with animals and my roommate was like, ‘Why don’t you make this your career?’ I looked into it, and I realized that it was something I really wanted to do.”
Asha said she also enjoys talking to people about their pet’s health and helping to work out their problems. She transferred from the University of Houston to Tarlton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where Asha received her Bachelors in Biology and Animal Science.
During her undergrad, Asha volunteered as a working student at a horse rescue. At Midwestern, Asha has volunteered for various community outreach programs, including food drives and product drops. She’s also apprenticed for a wildlife rescue in Texas in between her undergrad and vet school.
Asha said she heard about the externship program at Craig Road Animal Hospital during a career fair, and thought the program seemed like a great opportunity. She also had a classmate who did a rotation before her, and Asha’s classmate had nothing but wonderful things to say about the externship program.
With her externship, Asha said she’s most looking forward to seeing how a large, general practice operates and gaining more experience working alongside a large team of doctors. Asha said she’s most interested in preventative care and shelter medicine.
In her spare time, Asha helps her dog Jango with obedience training and going on mini-hikes together. Since Jango is a working dog, Asha spends most of her time training him.
